Porcine pleuropneumonia is caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App), a small Gram negative bacillus which colonises the pig's airways. The disease is contagious and can cause heavy economic losses. It is present in all countries where pig breeding is developed and it is one of the industry's major problems. Transmission is usually via an aerosol when animals are in direct contact with each other. Thus, the infection can spread when a healthy carrier is introduced into a unit or sometimes, by airborne contamination. The symptoms of acute infection are dyspnoea, coughing, anorexia, lethargy, fever and sometimes vomiting. In the absence of effective treatment, the disease can progress very fast, causing death within hours. Chronic infection is characterised by coughing and pleuritis although subclinical symptoms can go unnoticed.
